In 50 words
U.S. President Donald Trump says progress is being made toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland, with a potential location to be announced soon. Poland currently hosts American troops on a rotational basis and has long sought a larger U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank.
Why it matters
A permanent American base would deepen U.S.-Polish defence cooperation and strengthen NATO’s eastern military posture as the war in neighbouring Ukraine continues.
What's next
Washington and Warsaw still need to finalise the arrangement and location. Poland says it is prepared to provide a suitable site, while the Pentagon continues reviewing U.S. troop deployments across Europe.
