The Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, has instructed security agencies and related units in all provinces to prepare measures to prevent road accidents during the New Year holiday period.
Gen. Prawit attended a meeting with relevant agencies nationwide to discuss preparations for road safety during the New Year holiday. The meeting acknowledged preparations already made in major cities, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Nakhon Ratchasima. Intelligence units have been instructed to keep a close watch on risk groups in the country and abroad, particularly in key cities and the southern region. Security agencies in all provinces are to work together closely to ensure that all measures are carried out successfully in both border areas and major cities. They are to use technological resources to help oversee tourist destinations and other popular venues.
Relevant units are to study this year’s road accident statistics and adjust their plans accordingly.
The Ministry of Transport plans to inspect all types of public transport, the condition of roadways, lighting and traffic signs. Highway police are to facilitate traffic on key routes, while the Ministry of the Interior is to oversee routes in rural areas. The Ministry of Public Health is to ensure the readiness of clinics, hospitals and other medical facilities to minimize loss of life.
The Royal Thai Police has been instructed to strictly enforce road laws during the “Seven Dangerous Days”, especially dealing with drink-driving, speeding and motorcyclists who don’t wear safety helmets in all areas. The police will continue to suppress reckless activities, raise awareness and seek cooperation from the people to monitor suspicious activities and help each other.
