This is a simple story of an energetic young girl Subira, from a conservative Muslim family, who lives in the quiet island of Lamu, and has a natural attraction for the water. She longs to swirl and swim in the waters. But her tough mother will not have any of it. Instead, Subira gets married off to a well-to-do family in Nairobi. Subira is dazzled by the city, and her helpful husband is all too pleased to show her around. Her husband’s father, on the other hand, is conservative, and expects her to be involved with cooking and other household-chores.

But Subira is bored, and only longs to swim. She finds a swimming-instructor, and secretly attends classes but she finally gets caught. After that, she needs to solve the biggest crisis in her life which involves her husband, his father, and her mother.

Indian-born Kenyan Director Ravneet Sippy Chadha, making her debut feature film, said the story resonated with her own conservative background where a girl’s life was ‘laid out for her’.

“My work as a filmmaker is to expand consciousness such that we may break through our own limitations and live from a sense of aliveness” she stated.

The feature film was based on a Short Film Subira, thatChadha made in 2007, which went on to receive 15 international awards.

The lead is played by one of Kenya’s top actresses whose performance has won rave-reviews.

Not only did Subira win the country’s top Kalasa awards, it was screened at many film festivals, and was Kenya’s nomination for the Oscars in 2018.

What the Critics Said:

Nation: ‘Sippy’s thirst for freedom is the essence of Subira’s story and explains the movie’s appeal, especially to women.’

Kenyan Arts Review: ‘The film is seamless and stunning.’

Kenya Buzz : ‘The Sweetest Story to Come Out of Kenya in 2018.’

We thank the Embassy of Kenya for supporting the screening of this film.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya HE Lindsay K Kiptiness, will introduce the film and host a Reception after the screening.
