The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense has stressed that the Thai government places importance on the wellbeing of Thai citizens in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak.
Spokesperson Lt. Gen. Kongcheap Tantrawanit mentioned today that Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha had instructed the military to work closely with the Ministry of Public Health in preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Furthermore, the Premier also instructed the army to provide support in screening procedures at airports, tourist attractions, and border zones and in advising the public on protective measures against the disease.
The spokesperson noted that medical personnel of the military and state public health officials have experience in dealing with infectious diseases, such as the earlier Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), ensuring the effectiveness of their ability to prevent and contain communicable illnesses.
Lt. Gen. Kongcheap advised today that military hospitals have arranged quarantine zones, and distributed face masks to members of the public. He added that the ASEAN Center of Military Medicine is assessing and following the situation and said that the Royal Thai Air Force has readied four aircraft for the evacuation of Thais in China.
