DPM expects EU to acknowledge Thailand’s effort against IUU Fishing

The Thai government is working to effectively eliminate illegal, expecting the European Union to acknowledge the country’s effort, says DPM.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has said regarding the current elimination effort of the Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Thailand, that it is likely for the European Union to extend its ban on seafood imports from Thailand.

He has said however that Thai authorities have been working diligently to solve this issue for the past year with regular reports submitted to the EU; thus he expects the EU to acknowledgement Thailand’s effort.

The decision to extend import bans will depends on the EU’s discretion, while all sides in Thailand must help each other to overcome this issue, especially business owners who must refrain from illegal activities, the DPM has said.

The DPM has added the Thai seafood export sector will not be further affected, should the EU decided to keep imposing import ban to Thailand.
