Princess Sirindhorn opens the 12th Asia-Pacific Orchid Conference

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday officiated at the opening ceremony of the 12th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference at IMPACT exhibition and convention center in Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi Province.

Thailand, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, is playing host to the week-long international conference to show off Thailand’s high caliber in orchid production and its efforts to conserve the biodiversity of orchids. Her Royal Highness on this occasion awarded persons who have contributed to orchid development in Asia and the Pacific, namely Mr. Shi Shun-Chen, Honorary President of Taiwan’s Orchid Growers Association and Mr. Yoshihiro Hanashiro, Chairman of Okinawa Churashima Foundation. Those who won orchid contests held in conjunction with the conference also received their awards from the Princess.

The 12th Asia Pacific Orchid conference is held under theme of “Orchids and Human Beings”. Its activities include an orchid show and a lecture program designed to be an avenue to support the exchange and dissemination of common knowledge and trends in orchid development, biotechnology and conservation amongst orchid enthusiasts in the international community.

Her Royal Highness also took her time looking around the show of magnificent collection of orchids from around the world, the winning entries in the orchid garden contest and an exhibition on the royal project on plant genetic conservation.
