Thailand boasts a success in hosting WEF on East Asia

Thailand is calling its hosting of the 21st World Economic Forum (WEF) on East Asia a success for it has shown the international community the country’s economic stability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Deputy Director-General of the Information Department Sek Wannamethee said that the 21st WEF on East Asia, which Thailand hosted from May 30th to June 1st, has shown to the world that the country has strong economic fundamentals and concrete policies that emphasize on trade, investment and exports, and also a proof of its stance as the center of ASEAN.

The international gathering has seen more than 700 participants from 50 countries, including government and state leaders, noted business leaders as well as Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr. Sek stated that all related Thai ministers also took parts in several seminars. He said that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s speech, which conveyed a message of vision and focus on Thailand’s economic adaptability and strong foundation of democratic rule, has also boosted confidence of international investors and business people in the country’s readiness in entering the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.

Other issues raised at the gathering included such topics as a strong network between state and private sectors, measures to tackle natural disasters and the development of basic infrastructure, transportation and information technology.

The Deputy Director-General of the Information Department added that Thailand’s hosting of WEF has also allowed the country to manifest its investment potential and an opportunity to further promote tourism to the world.
