Food production costs increase 5-20% due to minimum wage hike

The National Food Institute (NFI) has indicated that the minimum wage hike to 300 baht per day has affected the production costs in the food industry.

According to the NFI, the minimum wage rise, now in effect in seven pilot provinces, has contributed to an increase of 5-20% in production cost. while the food industry is in short of around 50,000 low-skilled laborers.

Seafood production costs have risen the most by 20 percent; while production costs of meat, fruit, vegetable, bread, and bakery also increased by 5-10%.

The minimum wage has come into effect since April 1 in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi and Phuket.
