The Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand (ERC) has planned to increase the electricity charge for May-August, citing fuel price hike.
According to the ERC, the FT charge will likely be raised due to the increase of the global oil prices; besides, the ERC has already pegged the FT price for January-April.
Nonetheless, the Commission is considering alleviating people’s burdens by using leftover budgets of the electricity authorities in case they are not going ahead with a construction of new power plants.
Meanwhile, shou ld the government continue with the FT charge pegging, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has planned to seek a 10-billion baht loan for its regular administration.
Currently, the EGAT is shouldering 8 billion baht of the extra FT charge, while also having to pay another 3 billion baht for households using less than 50 electricity units a month, in line with the government’s free electricity policy.
