PM Abhisit says ASEAN only suggested ceasefires

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reportedly been attending a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as the progress on peace talks with Cambodia over the disputed border.

The Prime Minister explained that the effort by Thai Army Chief of Staff General Dapong Rattanasuwan to talk with Cambodia’s top brasses over the 4.6 square kilometers overlapping territory and to sign a ceasefire pact is a common practice at a regional level. However, more in depth talks will be carried out to draft a national policy.

He added later that the President of ASEAN only mentioned that both and Thailand and Cambodia should stop artillery attacks but failed to say how it would happen.
